I would agree with AA and suspect that this is a "composite" photo, the 19th century version of photo-shopping. I've seen a photo of General Sheridan's staff during the Indian Wars period done in a similar fashion, with Sheridan's horse standing just a few feet from a cannon being fired!

    Regards,

    Todd

Indeed Todd & AA. I can also cite a couple such 19th century compositions I've seen of Old West gunfighters and more than one (post) Ame. Civil War era picture

Nice photo. As usual, the well dressed gentlemen are standing.

So, Robert, you are back from Brittany now. Are you going to tell us anything about this pic?

Okay then. This picture comes from a selection of about 75 photos showing artefacts testfying of the presence of people, institutions and Scottish Societies in nineteenth century Montreal.

This is from the McCord Museum, in Montreal. Fortunately, it can be viewed in French.

Thanks, Robert. So the particular photo at the beginning of this thread is probably a composition, but that doesn't detract from its significance in 19C Montreal. Do you know whether it came from the Notman studio?

It almost looks to me as if all the kilted guys have been "added."
