Thousands of liters of malt whisky were reported lost when the SS Politician sank off the Outer Hebrides in 1941.
But most was nabbed by canny Scottish islanders who "liberated" the booze before government inspectors arrived.
And today, almost 70 years after the world famous incident that inspired the classic 1948 movie Whisky Galore, the last few precious drams are up for auction.
ln 1970 the Daily Mirror commissioned a team of divers to locate the wreck including Bob Pert, who was allowed to keep one of the bottles of Ballantine Scotch as a reward for his efforts.
Now Bob is putting it up for auction in Lewes East Sussex. lt is expected to fetch thousands of pounds when it finally goes under the hammer on December 3rd.

Whilst I was a wee laddie in 1940's I can well remember the event being talked about and several years later tasting a wee dram ,or two, of some whisky that had "drifted ashore" from the wreck. A bottle,from the wreck, would be worth more than a Pound or two now, no doubt.

I have the movie on VHS tape as I cannot find a dvd version, yet. I think its a wonderful movie. Do I guess right that the sing-songy accents used in the movie are genuine to the Outer Hebrides?

I have the movie on DVD but it's Region 2.

The movie was based upon a novelisation of the original incident by Compton McKenzie and set on the Island of Toddae, for which the Island of Barra was used in the movie.

The film might still be touring - it was also entitled 'Tight little island' and has been reported as showing in small cinemas around the world with appropriate subtitles.

It seems that the story appeals to audiences everywhere.

The whisky, and the rest of the cargo was, I believe, destined for the US, to raise dollars to pay for the war, so there was some ill feeling, and the fact that fate had juxtaposed Scots and Scotch was considered no excuse, which I think was a little harsh.
