PC with a black four in one tie?

I would say no to that one. Wouldn't look right. It's one of the reasons I went with the Argyle. It's like the Army Dress Blue uniform. You can wear it during the day with a four-in-hand tie or for an evening formal with a bow tie. The PC is more like the Mess Dress uniform, which is basically a formal tux - bow tie only, please.

A black Argyll jacket with its usual accoutrements and you'll be the finest dressed gent there.

Always understatement before overstatement.

I would tend to wear a bow tie only as the PC is the tail coat for highland dress, however there are a couple of examples on this recent thread that should allow you to form your own opinion. These being, after all, just very wide long ties with a large four-in-hand knot.

As I almost never go to formal affairs, I have been checking the thrift stores for a brown tweed to convert for occasions such as you describe. No luck so far.
