PC with a black four in one tie?

Oh good, someone finally compared the Prince Charlie to the tailcoat or dress coat instead of a tuxedo; that's been bothering me.

I wonder if the wearing of a PC without a waistcoat, but a silver waistplate and dress belt is proper? I come across that now and then.

I think it is, Ted, but I'm afraid I'm in the minority! I actually like it both ways (but just not both together).
I'd echo what davedove said. There may be acceptable alternatives to a jacket for this event, such as dress shirt and tie.
