Early this year, ago I piped a gig in donwtown Memphis. I was decked out in #1 dress - that's red tunic, horsehair sporran, spats, etc.

Leaving the parking garage, I stood directly in front of the elevator knowing full well if it was filled with people what would happen. I wasn't disappointed.

The doors opened to a filled elevator. The people looked up, and instantly a hole was made.

Almost makes wearing all that uncomfortable kit worthwhile.

I do think, though, that the next time I have a similar premonition I may try to wait by the elevator to see if something similar happens, then rush over and press one of the elevator buttons or stick my foot in the door. I think that would be an even bigger surprise.

Or just as the doors are closing, you rip your sporran off, spin around and throw it. The sporran is caught between the doors, stopping them from closing. As they open you walk over to retrieve it, put it back on and board the elevator standing between the shocked youth who have just witnessed their first glimpse of Highland ninjutsu.

What? Is "queer" an insult? Are you sure they didn't mean "unusually good" ("quare" as per Ulster Scots)? Or just "unusual," which kilt-wearers are, pretty much by definition?

Just call me happily, proudly queer...

Aside from good-natured ribbing from friends, I've never gotten a negative reaction when wearing a kilt.
The closest I came was a strange look and a smirk from a girl working at a bakery I stopped at. Didn't really bother me, and I just chalked it up to ignorance. I was wearing a solid olive Utilikilt at the time, and the girl was maybe 15 or 16. I doubt she even recognized it as a kilt.

Even when going somewhere like a sports bar, where you'd expect ignorance and machismo in equal proportion, I've gotten only compliments.

Continue to wear the kilt with confidence and pride!

Frankly, I would have just laughed the whole thing off and wouldn't let it bother me. I am surprised no one has accused me of being a cross-dresser yet especially since I wear my hair long. I have been mistakenly called "Ma'am" a number of times, but that only results in the person turning a lovely shade of red.
