May I recommend looking over the "Lasses Wear Thread", which sydnie7 graciously bumped up into visible status the other day. There are dozens, scores of pictures in that thread of how women can wear tartan, from skirts to hair scrunchies, from borderline X-rated to the extremely sensible.

I, personally have a California Tartan box-pleat kilt, in the modern colors (though I like the weathered colors better) and it engenders a fair bit of conversation since most people are surprised to discover that "it's not Scottish".

My wife has one to wear with her kilt; she picked it out, and I converted it to a shoulder bag.

As much as I hate "splitting hairs" and I am not a member of the Tartan Police, but it would be more accurate to say that you can wear nearly(99.9999%?) any tartan you wish.This subject has been discussed at length in a recent thread,but that missing wee tad of a percentage is important to some, albeit a minority, people.

I would have to agree with what has been said, there are no laws or rules governing which tartan you can wear, so choose one you like and then research it a bit , so you can answer questions when asked about it .

And most of all wear it with pride.

Not to change the trajectory of the thread too far, but in this and the other "women in kilts" thread I don't recall anyone specifically pointing out the huge disaparity in choice of hosiery between men and women. Women have a vast array of choices that are just not open to men, all of which can be used to say "yes, I am dressing as a female."
