Ted that all depends on the style of jacket you are talking about, for day wear then the bone or regular buttons would be fine, in fact that is what you'll find on a day wear tweed jacket. for more formal or evening wear then you would expect the black barathea wool Argyll with silver buttons.

I agree...with or withour is totally up to you.
My question is, if you do decide on the vest, would you wear the belt or not?

Thank you McMurdo. I had just been looking at a post in this thread talking about using two different styles of waistcoat in combination with two colors of jackets... I was trying to get all the buttons to add up. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
I guess someone needs to invent interchangeable buttons.

Waistcoat = no belt
The reason is that the belt can cause the Waistcoat to jut out un-naturally.

Depends on temperature. Three piece suits were intended for winter/cold weather wear. So a waist coat is a cold weather garment.

My reply is about 4 months too late, but I have to go with "with."

Always with unless there is a climate related reason not to. Being both large and tall (6'5" 280#) I find it helps hide the gut effect well and, becasue most ties are too short for my torso, gives me a convenient place to tuck in the otherwise short tails of my tie. And I think it just gives a better look of a big guy like me in general to break up the large field of color afforded by a jacket and kilt and hose.

I do not have either jacket or waistcoat at the moment but if I did I do not think I would ever wear the jacket without the waistcoat.

I wear a "vest" depending on the "look" I want & the Jacket.
1, Tweeds ( plain colored wool or sweater vest)
A. "casual Dress" = no vest or sweater vest

B. "Business" & dressier = Wool vest
II. Crail/Argyle = Always with the matching vest.

I prefer to go without the waistcoat.
