    Slow day at work today

I'd picked up a stash of black duck cloth with an eye to trying my hand at making a kilt for my son (he's smaller, so seemed a better first-attempt, plus he'd grow out of it pretty quick) sometime this weekend. Well, slow at work, so, here I am, sewing things up. I'm not using a set pattern, just my own study of my fathers old kilt, so hopefully it turns out for the best.

I don't know what is funnier, that I am sewing a kilt at work, or that across the way sits a man building a model of the Bismark....

Well, two pleats down now. Likely I'm not following the traditional methods, but it's a learning experience. Plus, I'd forgotten how much I love sewing.

All the pleats done, the apron hem and backing are in place and just need to be sewn down now. Should be done tonight, and I should be getting tartan fabric in next week to try my hand at a full sized. (doing one for my father, as I did well enough on this one to impress even my wife)

fantastic! Glad it's turned out well.

I noticed you said you're doing it from your study of an old kilt. That's a great way to start, but you may want to check out Barb's book (celticdragonpress.com) before you tackle a tartan kilt. There may be nuances you missed, and if nothing else, the book is a great read to fully understand a trad. kilt.

Plan on it once the holidays are over. I am an avid reader and enjoy new books anyways.

...and it is done. I'll need to wash it, but then I'll get pictures of my son wearing it tomorrow. First hand-sewn anything I've done in over a decade, so be kind.
