Nearly all of my "dressy" shirts, those worn with suit, sportcoat, or kilt jacket, are cuff-link types. Probably because my Father, who was an executive type with IHC (European operations) always wore shirts with cuff links. (Come to think of it, they had detachable collars too, but that would be from the era just ahead of me). My denim, flannel, and guyabara (sp?) shirts are not cuff-link.

To me a dress shirt must be long sleeved.

If I'm wearing jacket and/or waistcoat (with/without tie), the shirt has to be long sleeved. If I'm going without jacket and waistcoat, and know that's it's going to be warm enough to roll up my sleeves - then I'll go with a short sleeve shirt.

Those short sleeve versions give me the fashion heebie jeebies!

Jamie I agree wholeheartedly!

Also, the idea of wearing a short-sleeved, button-down collared shirt with a jacket just seems... very wrong. There'd obviously be no sleeve showing from below the arm of the jacket and would just look, well, odd.

It makes me sad that some pipe bands go with the short-sleeved/tie/waistcoat look.

			short sleeves & Phoenix

As a long time resident of Phoenix, and a veteran of Corporate America I can attest to this. In fact the City of Phoenix government has a summer dress code that dispenses with many items if attire (jackets, long sleeves, ties, and yes for you ladies- no panty hose). But then, these summer temperatures are not the norm for most of the world.

When they took off their jackets, they all had white short-sleeved dress shirts. I asked a guy I was working with what was up, and he said that the short sleeves were the one concession corporate America was willing to make thanks to the temperatures in Phx being 115-120 during the summer.
As much as short-sleeves give me the yips, that's the one time it sounds about right.

I would never dream of wearing a short sleeve shirt with a jacket, a waistcoat, or a tie. Also, most of my short sleeve shirts are either polos or have button down collars. No tie with those.
I live in an area where summer temperatures are frequently over 100F. If I'm going somewhere dressy (not formal) during the summer, I'll skip the jacket and go in a proper shirt and a tie.

Short sleeve, tie and waistcoat is the "pipe band look", donchyaknow. ;-)
It also bugs the heck out of me, because in my mind, if it's warm enough to wear short sleeves, then it's warm enough to go without the waistcoat and possibly the tie.

I'm with Panache. Short sleeve 'dress shirts' give me the heebies, but I'll wear one when playing with the band. Otherwise, the only short sleeves I wear are my t-shirts and knit/polo shirts.
