You can dress up or down an 8-yd trad (or 4-yd box pleat) very well. The handsewns will look best dressed up, but the USAK semi-trads dress up well also.
As for the Wood being uncommon, you can lower the cost by going with a 4-yd box-pleated kilt instead of an 8yd, and I think Matthew Newsome (of the Scottish Tartans Museum, M.A.C. Newsome here on the boards) can get kilt-length special runs at a decent price.
Best of luck on getting your kilt done, and the semi-trad is a good choice in the meantime.
