A simple google search brought up a reference to a googlebook link which pretty much had the whole book page by page on the link, with the keyword highlight function it was easy to find the exact page (I can't remember that much detail right now) which is where I got the quote. Often there is ancillary info in adjacent passages that may help with this kind of research---in this case it was more the actual way the kilt was described that was more helpful (in context "the grey kilt of Chapelpark of Badenoch" seemed more to describe a grey kilt owned by the protagonist Chapelpark of Badenoch rather than a direct reference to a specific tartan of that name). Then a simple background search for the remainder of the info found the birth reference to the MacPhersons, along with several more direct references to the Hunting MacPherson tartan directly from Matt Newsome's online resources.
Spend enough time in front of a computer and you can find just about anything sooner or later. Google is great but therre are other search engines out there as well that are equally powerful but less well known.
