I wore mine for New Year's Eve in Edinburgh with a black light-weight turtle neck sweater, black hose and silver flashes that matched my mink sporran. Very stunning.
I agree with the others that any color works well with black. You can go casual or dressy with the black kilt.
I wore a shadow tartan for my wedding, with all black except for a burgundy self-tie bowtie that matched the bridesmaid's dresses. As an aside. getting self-ties in specific colours is not easy! Especially as I couldn't really order from the web because I couldn't be sure of a colour match. That was a long day, visiting every gentleman's outfitter and wedding shop in Glasgow only to discover the exact shade I was looking for on a stall (Tie Rack) in the train station on the way home!
People told me the outfit looked good. Pictures exist somewhere on the interwebs but I don't know where .

I have the black shadow tartan kilt. I like to keep that one casual, so I'll pair it up with:
Black wool over-the-calf hiking socks
Leather side zip "entery" boots
Black and green Celtic FC jersey... GO HOOPS!
All leather sporran attached with a black belt and a black chain
Kilt belt with "antique" buckle
Black leather biker jacket, when it's cool outside
And, the effect is pretty awesome.
