I'm with Alan H on this one. I wear soccer/rugby socks when I throw at highland games , and sometimes scrunched down with boots , but when I want to dress things up a bit I leave those at home. That being said , the maroon ones don't look too bad if you are waiting on others to arrive.

I agree with AlanH, I bet those burgundy ones would look just fine, scrunched down with boots.

Just a heads-up...I bought 2 pair of Hamilton Dry Goods cotton kilt socks off of ebay. He sells regularly, look up his store. The deal was one pair white, one pair green, but I wrote him and asked for "anything but white" so he sent me apair of black and a pair of green.

They are head and shoulders above these soccer socks, and they're $13 plus shipping for two pairs. I have GIGANTIC calves, and they're a bit tight on me, but acceptable for anyone with even *large* calves (but not gigantic) they'd be the killer budget solution.

I'd also like to put the general plug in for Hamilton Dry Goods. They're always done right by me, and I've bought 6-8 pairs of cotton socks from them. They also carry a banded-collar "highland-type" shirt that I think would go very well with a kilt.

For a casual look the burgundy hoses is ok. For me the problem with all types of socks, be there soccer or kilt socks, is that I have long legs. I always have problems with having enough rollover on top. The solution is probably to invest in expensive hand knitted hoses.

Rugby socks are perfectly good as long as they match the outfit. I often wear them on non-formal occasions. I wear a kilt, not because I want to emulate some 'standard'. I wear a kilt because I want to be comfortable and look good.

I'd say they'd be fine in an emergency/tight spot. The burgundy ones looked ok to me and suited the tartan. Whilst doing things the 'proper' way is nice it can also be difficult and sometime expensive so people should realise that others have to compromise sometimes.
