At times like those I give thanks for my camping supplies and fire place. Several years ago we lost power for the better part of a week, but we managed with the aid of Colman camp stoves, fireplace, tent heaters and lots of quilts. The other saving grace was we did have hot water as the gas never was interrupted.
Unfortunately you were the receiving end of the spotted rat syndrome; when all the rats are the same color, the spotted rat gets picked on. We can be either really great, or drop to the lowest denominator, which happened to you.
On the other side, a whole lot of people got to see a kilted man for two days, which is more than they probably see in years. Under some of those jokes and comments probably ran some unvoiced respect. What goes around comes around; what you put out, you get back. Someday, someone may say something like they were amazed by how you were so calm, or how you took it so well.

Look at it this way. You provided the entertainment to pass the time for the other folks. You remained steadfast to your kilt wearing. Congrats, on both!

They were jealous because none of them looked half as cool as you did!

Sadly, it would be those same absent-minded people who would be the first to ask you for help if needed. The herd mentality is sad sometimes. Luckily, you're back home and away from the sheep.

Well, I haven't looked at it that way, now I can look back and put it in my unofficial resume: "entertained 90 'trousered' people for 2 days while wearing a BKW kilt'
Other than the personal hassle and mean spirited comments, the actual 'we're all in this together' was there, but as someone mentioned above, herd mentality always takes over.
Now, on to more cheerful things!

Sorry to hear about it all bud. I'm a bit from there now but was lucky enough not to lose power. Cable yes, but still had heat.
I will tell you this though. I work at the Boone National Guard center in Frankfort where the Emergency Operation Center for the state is as well. They are working round the clock to get everything taken care of. FEMA even showed up today. Granted they had a few people here by Wednesday but for some reason they brought a huge truck they aren't using (Honestly, we have 2 that are better anyway).

It's one of those life experiences that we all go through but would rather have avoided.
