Well I think it's a great idea to rent because while SWK kits are ok for Very Very CASUAL wear, it's no good for anything beyond the very, very casual wear.

I managed to go on two last year. Granted, they were Carnival cruises (I've been quite happy with Carnival overall) and I wasn't expecting much turnout at "formal night", but truth-be-told, I still found myself mortified as to what folks were considering "formal" on that ship.
On the 2nd cruise, then, knowing formal night wouldn't be quite as formal as I'd liked/hoped, I wore something a bit different (me on the left, with my good friends). Oddly enough, it went over well.

Anyways, for this year, I have a few planned and I'd like to wear my kilt/Argyle/waistcoat!

Yes I have been on several cruises and know that there are alot of variety in formal styles. The main reason I want to look spiffy is the profession pics being done around the ship that night. SWMBO (She Who Must BE Obeyed), takes this oppertunity seriously for our yearly family pics. Thanks for the offer of help to buy me a formal sporran, but I am just a Cheap SOB, not broke, but I apoligize on the assumption that a stranger would just part with a valuable piece. Stupid question number 53, if I rent do I go with a fly plaid too, or will that be over the top?

Not to dissuade you from Arizona Kilts but most Cruise ships have formal rentals that include Kilt sets. You might look on your cruiseline's web site and see.

If you're going to be formal, why not? At least for the photo op.

I would say for me anyway the fly plaid would be over the top. However to each their own on this is the best way to go, so if you want to go ahead, it's just that I would not.

MM- Not "cheap" just "thrifty"- good Scottish trait! And in my book SOB means Short of Breath. And I am sure you will have that experience at some point during your trip to Philmont. Regards!

Remember the basic fact of commerce: until you hand over the cash, you're in charge.
I agree that you should work a deal with the guy to rent-to-own, if you will, the outfit. Or at least the kilt itself. Maybe rent the whole outfit, then actually apply the rental price toward buying a nice tank.
If the kilt business is like every other business I know of these days, they need your patronage and will work a deal to get it. You will both win.
And you're not a cheap SOB; you're a good frugal Scot who knows how to find a bargain.
Go get yourself a nice tank and wear it the rest or your life, then leave it to your heirs.

Like Derek, I've been appalled as well at the outfits worn on "formal" night. Mostly . . . well, not formal.
As to the fly, leave it off. It's ostentatious at best.

Not over the top at all. I don't know yet if I can pull it off. However I have just purchased a PC jacket and vest from another member here, and once it arrives, I may be experimenting with the plaid fly idea. But, for the cruise, I would certainly try it and see if you like it. I think the whole thing looks classy.
