			officer's walking sticks...

This post was actually from another thread, but I thought I'd start a new one to keep from hijacking the old one.

Officers of Scottish regiments carried walking sticks ( what an American would call a "cane"). They would carry the stick on parade hooked around their arm behind the elbow and held in the hand. When the RHR left Hong Kong I believe sticks were carried by the officers. I could be wrong, but I certainly remember a film clip of some of the garrison bording a troop ship with the officers carrying sticks.

What say you Nervous Jock?

Cheers,

Does anyone know of a source for the aforementioned officer's walking sticks? Authentic ones, mind you...

My cane, actually a leather clad stick, came from "Swaine Adeney and Brigg" London. Mind you that was some fifty years ago!

Wasn't that a straight stick like a swagger stick rather than a walking stick with a hooked top?

Quite right. I don't recall seeing anyone with an actual walking stick,in my time, I rather fancy they went out of fashion pre WW2. I have certainly seen hundreds WW1 of pictures with the sticks as you describe. In the Highland regiments the officers used to carry a cromach, I am not sure that was "official" equipment though and I am unsure if they still do carry one.

The Royal Navy officers certainly had walking sticks, in the first half of the 20th century, but they were straight, not bent wood.
I have one if you want a photo.

It would be easy to make one, they are just a tapered piece of wood with an oval knob for a handle.

No. I'm referring to the walking sticks/canes carried by the officers in the movie Tunes of Glory. These are not the same as a swagger/pace stick.

You can just barely see Jock Sinclair's walking stick in this screen shot.
