I'm not sure about the Fleming being a $900 kilt, I'd be interested in where you got that number from. I had my Royal Naval Association kilt done for far less and it was a special weave from DC Daglish. Perhaps you need to look around some more. If you are interested in more info feel free to PM me.

I know that I went on a kilt binge initially. But I've settled down some and now quantity is being replaced with quality. My SWK kilts are great, made well (quality product mind you), and serve a purpose, BUT now I've gotten bit by the wool/tank bug and that is where the real quality comes in. I will keep the existing lot and will only add one or two kilts per year. All kilts feel nice, the wool tanks feel nicer.

I don't actually suffer from the need to "narrow down". I have four kilts:
1. Modern Douglas (family tartan) 8 yd 16oz hand-sewn tank
2. Modern Douglas 16oz 5 yd casual
3. Black Shadow SWK heavyweight
4. Irish National SWK standard
The only one that I might add is the SWK Green Shadow tartan Heavyweight.
That being said, I have an ever-growing collection of accessories. Hose, sporrans, jackets, hats, pins, etc. That's where I get all my shopping in. I kilt part is easy, but the accessories make the outfit. And depending on where/when I'm wearing the kilt, the accessory package has to be changed, most often drastically.

I have eight at the moment, two of them have been very abused. All my tartan kilts are Douglas tartans and there are a few more I do want. Just added a few accessories, all brown, for a more casual look. I see myself eventually having around fifteen or so kilts.

Some folks only want to wear tartans that they have a direct family connection to. That's how they feel a tartan or a kilt has "meaning" to them.
I also feel that, but what has more "meaning" to me is if I made the kilt or not. So, for example a MacNaughton kilt that I bought is roughly equal to any other tartan kilt that I made, in terms of "meaningfulness".
The kilts that I am least attached to are the ones I didn't make and aren't in a clan or region that I'm associated with................though I really like the Scottish National tartan, and I identify *VERY* strongly with the cause that lies behind teh creation of the capercaillie tartan. That is, habitat preservation, and conservation of the natural world.
I'm tempted by the 3 yards of County Cork tartan that The Scottish Weaver has had on sale for weeks and weeks, now. Why? Because a book that I read fifteen years ago that had a very, very significant impact on my sailing life, and therefore on my life overall, was muchly set in Cork Harbor. I also think that the Cork tartan looks absolutely great, made up in a kilt. And yet I keep resisting. Now I understand why.

I'm right with you there, Alan. I've sold off a number of kilts lately, two of which were low-cost purchases. I, too, can see the day when I have only kilts I've made myself.
Of the 14 I own right now, only 5 were purchased.

I've made three of my five and two of Scooby's three; I thought that was because I was cheap, oops, I mean thrifty. I would happily spend money on finished kilts if I had it, but it is fun to tell people I made it myself.
