Ted, to me it's easier to pleat to sett in a box pleat than in a knife pleat. So, say start your first box pleat to your first stripe -
fold along nicely to form the box pleat so that there are no gaps between edges (not always, but in this case there are no gaps) until you hit the next major stripe (at this point it's one and a half setts away from the first stripe).
It's easier done that said. ( , that's the first time I used that expression in reverse).
You should give it a try if you have tartan remnants or perhaps a tartan scarf or blanket.
