Men in Kilts - Never go forth into the world unarmed!
In a recent thread a member expressed how another fellow and his girlfriend had tried to humiliate him for wearing a kilt. This X Marker noted that he isn't the best at snappy comebacks.
I put it to the ladies and gentlemen of X Marks the Scot that wearing a kilt outside of a Highland Games or other Scottish themed event is a bit out of the ordinary.
There will be people either ignorant or just stupid who will try to make sport of us.
Moderator Tattoo Bradley has been using this quote in his signature line for a while now:
"I pick my favourite quotations and store them in my mind as ready armour, offensive or defensive, amid the struggle of this turbulent existence.”
-Robert Burns
I think that every kilted gentleman should include a few good handy quips among his accessories when we sally forth into the world so that when we encounter these people we are prepared.
Make them clever, make them intelligent, and make them the words of a gentlemen (i.e. everything that the other person showed they were not )
Neither the unloaded highland pistol nor the blunted dirk are best for defending ones person. The same holds true for our minds.
Keep them ready and sharp
As the Boy Scouts say:
Be Prepared!
Just a thought
Cheers
Jamie

I offer this to add to your arsenal.

One of the helpful things about threads, such as the one that you mentioned, is that it gives us real play of situations that may confront us. We are therefore better prepared to respond to the situation.
As you rightly point out, wearing a kilt outside of Scottish themed events, is out of the ordinary.
See my signature below: You can't control what other people do or say, you can only control how you respond.

I agree as well (being the person that started the other thread mentioned), I don't think I have been really prepared for what would happen. However, I now have some great ideas, thanks to some great people on this site.

Absolutely fine advice.
In fact I gave it to my son recently to deal with a school bully. My lovely wife suggested adding a bored just slightly irritated (at the distraction not the speaker's actual words) of "Whatever" .
My son reported after using this tactic only twice, the bully quit trying to get his goat.
Granted my son is a third grader, but the people we are talking about dealing with aren't that much more intellectually developed.

Battle of Wit
Jamie, I couldn't agree more. Regardless of the onslaught of indecency from the accuser, I have often defended my stance with wit and watched there minds race for the conclusion of my joust.
When asked, "Why are you wearing a Skirt?" I relpy:
"Don't skirt the issue, call the KILT for what it is"

*Applause applause*
Nail on the head, Jamie!
but one must remember that in a war of wits, words are the weapons and most people go into battle unarmed
The all purpose:
Excuse me (sir madame), I was wondering if you are merely unschooled, or ignorant or purely rude. Would you be so good as to tell me which?
