Yeah, the idea of going "regimental" in a hired kilt just gives me the shivers.

If they are not going to hand out something on the lines of a disposable or easily washable kilt liner, then insisting on something between the hirer and the returnable item is in the best interests of all concerned.
It is, of course only a relatively recent innovation for men - and women - to wear briefs. The number of layers of clothing worn has reduced over the decades, and the garments themselves have reduced in length and weight and volume of cloth used as outer garments have been tailored closer to the body.
The restrictions imposed upon men by modern trousers were not felt by earlier generations, and the looser styles meant that long vests/singlets and shirts cut to mid thigh or below, with side slits, could be worn beneath trousers in perfect comfort.
If anyone has read Gulliver's Travels might recall, when the Lilliputian king directed that his parade of coaches and dignitaries should pass between Gulliver's ankles as he straddled the road, his worn out britches meant that anyone looking upwards got an unrestricted view....

Could give you something else too if you were not careful. Rental garments should be worn with a base layer. Think of it like stores asking women to wear underwear while trying on bathing costumes. It is a question of hygiene and propriety.

I have never hired a kilt and never will.
I have, however, had occasion to hire a car and what I feel I can do in my own car and what I can do in a hired one are different and one has to accept the conditions made.
It's a sad fact that many people take better care of their own things then things that are temporarily in their possession and they know that somebody else has to clean up after them.
So one can understand the attitude that many kilt hire companies are now striking.

That is truly heartening, John. I am exactly the same!

I completely understand the concern, I certainly would not want to be the poor chap who has to receive the rented garments when they are returned. I have rented a kilt it was about 6 years ago for my brothers wedding, we all wore something underneath, and while it was not a hard rule by the hiring firm it was suggested, for our own health as well as anyone else. Lets face you never really know where these hire kilts have been. Thankfully I no longer need to rent a kilt.

Yes, if I owned a rental company and hired out kilts, it would be my solid policy to insist on undergarments. Common sense should rule.

I guess my only thought would be...
who would want to rent from a company that didn't (ahem) clean the kilt upon its return?!!
If they don't clean them after every use ...nevermind the hygienic issues...why do they charge so much to rent them?
And if they do clean them...as a matter of policy...then this all seems a little like a tempest in a teapot.
