Silly me I always thought rentals were washed after use???

I would certainly hope they are washed. That said, would you wear a pair of underpants that 20 other men had worn? "don't worry, we've washed them"

I would hope to never have to rent a kilt, first, as fitting my girth and height is hard enough with custom made kilts. That said, if I were to rent a kilt I would wish to insure that it was properly "cleaned" before even trying it on, let alone wearing it. And for my own peace of mind, comfort, and hygiene I would definitely wear briefs beneath, damn the traditionalists. Most trads aren't going to be renting kilts anyway as they have their own to wear as needed.

I agree with the dictum that undergarments must be worn with rented kilts and would support (no pun intended) that movement unreservedly.

Add a third to that. It's just polite.

As for hired Kilts: I've never hired one but had a taxi driver on the way to my cousin's wedding telling me all about how he got so drunk in his hired Kilt he peed all over the hose and the inner apron.
Imagine getting that back at the store?!

Washed or not, it's still gross! How many pairs of used underwear have you seen in second-hand shops? Just wholesale yuck.

I doubt most rental outfits are actually cleaned, rather they're refreshed using a steamer. Many kilt rental agreements state that extra charges will be incurred if the kilt is returned soiled, burned or wet, charges can range from cost of cleaning or repair up to replacement cost of the damaged item. Most of us X-Markers own our own kilts and don't get them cleaned after each wearing but I agree there is a skeeve factor in renting a kilt where someone elses "boys" have been. All the more reason to purchase a kilt.

I don't know one way or the other...cleaned or washed. I would think 'cleaned,' as it is all one process (even if they have to be handled a little differently) to clean an Argyll or a PC and to clean a kilt. They're not gonna wash a PC, are they?

When I rented a kilt for my daughter's wedding (first time I wore a kilt) I wore briefs for all the reasons given. But you know, thinking on it, it's easy to take this too far...ever sat in a chair where a guy wearing a kilt didn't sweep his pleats? Ever try on a pair of trousers in a men's store? How many guys before you have tried those trousers on? How many were wearing small clothes? Are you sure?

Or have you ever ordered soup at a restaurant? Are you sure no one has spit in it? This used to be common practice in certain part of this country and even more surely overseas.

If it's just something else to worry about, then go for it. But if you're really worried, go get your self a pair of black silk boxer trunks. You can even cut off the bottom of the legs for a makeshift kilt "slip."

And the best solution of all...expressed here often...don't rent kilts.

It would be interesting, however...and maybe more than a little eye-opening...to hear from one of these companies that has kilts for hire. What do they do when a kilt is returned?

Besides hired kilts there are places (and not just the tat shops) that offer off the peg kilts.

That means if one tries them on that one is trying on what others have probably tried on before and the shop has no idea if you have something on when trying them of if those before you had either. If you don't want it it goes back on the rack without being cleaned or refreshed.

OK you wouldn't have had it on for long and nor would they, but as DWF says, how far can you take it? Issues of hygiene are one thing but do we really all get deeply Freudian about trying something on knowing that it's likely that the garment has been acquainted with another guy's bits and pieces?

LOL geez, reading this thread just makes me want to get out the blacklight

Glad that I took the plunge and purchased my first instead of renting it, I might be having convulsions right now otherwise.
