Do you ever just NOT want the attention?

This past Saturday was the annual St Patrick Day parade here in Binghamton, always held a couple of weeks early so that some great pipe bands can be scheduled (the NYPD lads, for example). Well, "Parade Day" has grown to rival St Paddy's Day itself for Irish-oriented festivities and carousing, so we in effect have two St Paddy's Days every year.

One of the fun aspects of Parade Day is to "pub hop" around town, taking in the various Celtic music groups scheduled, and to hopefully encounter the roving gangs of pipers from the parade bands in town - always a big hit at a pub when they show up to play a few tunes.

A perfect opportunity for going out kilted, right? Here's the problem: you enter a pub or bar wearing your kilt and instantly hear a chorus of "Hooray! A bagpiper!!" Then you have to stop an explain that, no, you're not a piper, you just happen to be wearing kilt, blah, blah, blah! It gets old....

So, Saturday I wimped out and went out in trousers.

Do others ever just want to avoid the attention that wearing a kilt can bring on?

Only if that attention is coming from men. I don't mind attention from the ladies...ever.

Nah! If someone asks me where my bagpipes are I tend to answer, "under the kilt, laddie, want to give them a try?" (unless there are those with tender ears present).

I rarely get unusual attention (and don't expect to). That said if someone asked me where my pipes were I'd simply say at home and keep walking. Short and simple.

My wife assumes i wear a kilt FOR the attention. not the case. Usually when i'm wearing one, I am 1,000 Times more self-conscious than any other times. Always looking around thinking "who's staring at me?" "What smart *** comments am i about to hear?"

    Uh . . . nope, don't think so.

Things like that usually give me the oportunity to prctics my snappy come backs.

I get tired of having to come up with snappy comebacks!

I know it's a fantasy, but I long for a day when kilts are common enough that all the turned heads, gaping mouths, pointed fingers, and doltish comments are a thing of the past.

I'm NOT overly sensitive or self-conscious. Generally I don't give a tinker's damn about other people's reactions! It's just that every so often even the positive attention is downright wearisome....

Not so much. My experience is that the feedback is almost exclusively positive.

I generally like the attention that is directed my way when kilted. But there are situations where it's not about me, or where I just want to fly under the radar. In those situation, I will opt for alternative garb.

Simplest solution is to take your pipes with you! They're always good for a dram or two. :-)
