I've never had a problem going through customs when returning from Scotland. Last time over, I took two kilts and three doublets, three sporrans, and all other gear. I did leave a sealskin sporran at home, but took my otter mask sporran. Nothing was ever searched in my presence, and no questions were asked. One time, though, there was a card from the US Customs telling me they had looked in the bag. Must not have been anything to worry them!

I'm envious of anyone who can still fit in a kilt they had made 25 years ago!

....me too. Mine shrank quite a bit hanging in the closet for so many years. I had to have it retailored by a local kilt maker. She did a fine job and now I can wear it again

This last July I took a kilt with me and had no problems even though my luggage was searched.

Not with a kilt, but coming back from two weeks in Ireland about 4 years ago I was randomly pulled out of the crowd for a customs check. The only things they really questioned were several very nice Irish hand knit sweaters I had bought, becasue they thought that their value exceeded what I had declared, but when I showed them the receipts their jaws dropped, saying that I had gotten an exceptional deal on them for their quality. Same thing happened when they came across my irish whisky bottles----questioned the valuation but then when they saw the receipts that verified my declared valuation they just rolled their eyes like I got a price even they couldn't get in the duty frees.
I make it a habit of carrying receipts for anything I buy of value oversees, and for anything I take with me that I think might cause customs to question whether I was bringing back goods from the country visited, especially if it is something that was originally made in that country. I would rather have the receipts and not need than have the other occur, and lose something valuable or have to pay twice for it.

Hey, I still fit in a kilt I bought in 1985. Of course, I have extension straps!
