One thing that worries me about splitting sub forums, like Tartans and Heraldry, is that the old sub-forum might be locked down after the split. A lot of those threads are useful and do get updated with new information.

    Just a pang of fear.

If there is a section on the Scottish Field Sports, I feel that this would be acceptable. I practice all field sports. Rules would be set, (killed game displayed respectfully), Weapon, caliber, sites and ammunition specs stated. The Countryside Alliance and the Scottish Countryside Alliance have set standards for public forums which are reasonable. They also have an excellent educational section on explaining the different field sports.

But remember, all hunting is NOT done with firearms. There is ferreting, archery, terriers, coursing, falconry, etc.

When I moderator moves a thread in generates an automatic PM to the original poster stating the thread has been moved. We try our best to follow that up with either

    (a) A post in the thread saying something like "moved to Kilt Accessory Forum"

    (b) a second PM to the OP explaining what is going on.

So what you are suggesting is that we turn off the auto message and hope that each time we move a thread we have time to send a personalized message to the OP. This isn't a bad idea but speaking as a Moderator there have been times when I have to leave in 2 minutes to pick someone up and suddenly a thread turns bad.

I like the fact the the auto message at least explains to the OP that something has happened to the thread.

Just trying to show what the view looks like from the staff side of things.

As for your first thought I think that separate sub forums for tartans and heraldry is a good idea.

    Cheers

    Jamie
    Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the insight. I am a member of some fora that are little better than the original bulletin boards and it keeps on amazing me how sophisticated XMarks really is.

    Hi Rob,
'Same thing no?' - Same thing NO! This is a forum discussing a particular item of clothing. The wearing of which could easily be dictated by the weather or climate or type of local in which one is going to wear it. Both McMurdo and Riverkilt live on the same continent, but where they live on that continent affects how they can and do wear their kilts - their names do not. I see a great big difference, don't you?

    Regards

Actually I don't see the difference because you stated you would just be happy to see USA in the the location and wondered why people were shy of posting their location. I agree location can play a role in how one wears the kilt but there was no indication of that in your post. No worries, for some local does play a big part and for others it doesn't. *shrugs*

    Edited to add:

Location can also be secondary to how one wears the kilt, it could be June in New Mexico in the desert and you are required to wear the kilt black tie style, or casual, or dressy day wear, which has nothing to do with WHERE one is.

But anyway, Alan, I think you are giving yourself too much credit for being an irritant. You may have raised a few eyebrows from time to time, but I seriously doubt with all that you've added to our community here that you've sunk to the level of ignorable.

The same goes for you, DWFII. You may be in a different camp than others, but you're nothing if not respectable.

Not like anyone burned a mental image of a kilted chap testing out mattresses while shopping. Oh wait. It's in there. Who did that? Oh, yeah.

    Nevermind.

I agree with those who have reminded us that this is a forum about kilts and wearing them. What ever is decided I hope that it does not dilute this. I am still learning from everyone here about kilts both traditionalist and modernists, so I hope that any changes won't further divide this forums members.

We need a "Group Hug!" smiley.

I think it was Rex who used to say we leave part of ourselves behind when we log on to XMTS. Also, it can take a long time for others to get to know you, so the ignore button and the division is probably to be expected. Such is life.

I don't see the point in making the location a required field. If I don't want to tell others about my real location, I am just going to pick a random country. Some people just don't want to reveal too much about themselves to a group of stranger.

Hello every one, glad to meet you all. Been on this forum for about a month and its great. I feel I have known everyone for years, you pick up on personalities through posts, threads, advice and hummor ect. Everyone is great, would like to meet alot more members but still a bit shy. How about some competitions or awards ie The best kilted member The best kiltmaker The best thread of the month The best member of the month The best moderator of the month ( I guess Pananche would win all the time ). What ever way the forum moves, am sure there will be something for everyone.
Kind wishes to my fellow friends
