I'm of Irish/Icelandic decent. I wear mostly "Irish" tartans and contemporaries (UK, AK...). I do have a couple of clan tartans, but I've decided to keep it to Irish and "fashion" tartans for my next purchases. Just a choice thing...

I am of Scottish ancestry via the North of Ireland if my Family Tree DNA analysis can be believed. I wear fashion tartans of two of the Patron Saints of Ireland; St. Patrick and St. Columba.

Here is my tuppence worth; Look at what is out there as far as tartans (Scottish & Irish), pick the TWO that really ring your bell, toss a coin for 1st and 2nd choice, buy the 1st one and plan on buying the 2nd one when feasible. The Rabble will concur with me that there is nothing in the world like the feeling you get when you strap on your first kilt. BE WARNED !!! You are embarking on something that can become an addiction. LOL.

I too am of Irish background and am looking into the County Mayo tartans to have made into a kilt someday. Meanwhile there are so many great looking Scottish tartans available that I would say the only answer to your dilema on which tartan to get is to buy one (or more) of each.
