I was in the same quandry you are now, some time ago. I'm predominently Irish so I'll wear "Universal" Scottish Tartans But there are some truly nice Irish County Tartans from either House of Edgar or Lochcarron. There are also two versions on the Ulster Tartan. All of the above are extremely nice looking and my mouth waters everytime I think about getting a tank in any of the above. The Scots and the Irish are sort of interchangeable as they moved about the Isles looking for work etc. The producers of the cloth see the U.S. Irish as another marketing venue and we have not let them down. The important thing is to pick one, learn about the history of the Tartan, and wear it with pride knowing full well that you an Irishman wearing a Scottish clothing item. We all know that it was the Irish who first came up with the idea well before Mel Gibson started to rally others to the cause.

I too am of Irish background and am looking into the County Mayo tartans to have made into a kilt someday. Meanwhile there are so many great looking Scottish tartans available that I would say the only answer to your dilema on which tartan to get is to buy one (or more) of each.

I say where them. I'm Irish descent as well. I have a county Galway and Irish National Tartan both in 5 yard and an SWK Irish Saffron Shadow heavyweight. I have a Kilkennny jacket and waistcoat on order.
I've very rarely heard disparaging comments. So go for it!

Hello from Wisconsin...
Im Irish, not Scotish, but wear a Kilt on occasion, and with more frequency of late.
I made my first kilt myself, and if you're the least bit adventurous, I'd invite you to do the same. I also own a SWK national Irish Tartan. My family hails from Claire and Cork counties... way back when.
Just do it. The gals love a guy in a kilt.

Welcome to the forum! As you can see, you get different answers from different folks around here. If it weren't for my Scottish ancestry, I'd have nothing to do with kilts and no interest in them whatsoever. So... "to each his own." as they say.

As a follow up, keep in mind that many of the Irish who came to America were not Irish in the same way as... well... the rest of the Irish. The Scots-Irish (what we called 'Scotch-Irish' when I was growing up) were originally from Scotland, but I'm sure you know this already.
