    weekend project

I tend to like the Rob Roy sporrans, I made myself one last year for the Ren Fest, and my wife one that was altered into a purse, and my little boy I believe has one for when he gets a little older. The one pictured I started Saturday evening, and finished Sunday night. It is made primarily out of soft deer hide with some heavier pieces where stiffness is needed. I braided goatskin lacing for the drawstrings. I also cut up a nice size 9 point rack for the button and string ends. I added a little bit of piping in the front, on the lid, and around the rim. I to increased the depth by about one inch, the gusset by about an inch. Enjoy!!!

The original recipe cites a front and back piece as "U" shaped, 8" from top to bottom and with a 4.5" radius in the lower, curved section. Which means that it is a truncated (chopped off) 9" circle...except the sides are straight.

    Again, two are needed.

    The gusset is 2.5" wide.

The over-flap is shaped somewhat like a ping pong paddle with a wide handle. The "handle" is 2.5" wide and 5.5 inches long. The "paddle" is, naturally, attached to one end of the "handle" and its radius is 2-1/8".

I am making one of these currently and I have changed some of the dimensions and the shape of the over-flap. I think many do. But I don't think that there is anything wrong with the original recipe. Thompson takes issue with commercial sporrans as being too small to get your hand into and, as a consequence, I feel certain that he addressed that issue when setting out the dimensions of the Rob Roy sporran.

What with all the photos in this and other threads you should be able to figure out how to put one of these together pretty easy.

    Good luck....

    Rob Roy Sporran - dimenisons

I just realized that I never posted the dimensions for the sporran I made. I do apologize for that oversight.

Here you go. You should be able to get the dimension from the photos. The grid is 1" square.

The front and back panel - cut your web (I made mine 2-3/4" wide) and sew it to each edge of the front and back panel to form the sides. Be careful to line them up properly or your front panel will be miss-aligned with your back panel and not lie right.

The reenforcing panel for the front and the back

    The over-flap

    Good luck with your projects!

The brown is very very nice too, but I still like the earlier Black offering much better, don know why I prefer Black much more. Just my opinion!
