Yep--the top one works better, I just have a few adjustments on it. I'll try to post a red version. But in the red, the grey gets lost a bit:

When you're designing tartan, remember to stand back about 20' from a to-scale version on your computer monitor. That way, you can see how the colors combine to give an overall color from a distance. It also allows you to see what elements vanish at a distance.

I'm prompted to say this because, any time you have red elements next to blue elements, the overall impression can be purple at a distance (depending on the relative sizes of the elements). There's nothing wrong with that, and there are several tartans that are spectacularly beautiful because of this effect. But you don't want to be surprised by it!

I've also noticed how not only does the overall color scheme change at distance, it also darkens the colors.

Actually, maybe "Bloody William and Mary", becasue the original idea to use military force on one or more of the rebellious highland clans (to make them an example of what happens to those who don't swear fealty to the crown) was actually their decree and the action condoned by them even afterwards, although history seems to have let them off (pardon the pun) Scot free.

The Earl of Stair, John Dalrymple actually gave the order to Campbell of Glenlyon for his force of soldiers (only about a dozen of whome were Campbell clansmen) to carry it out. William offered a pardon to all clans who had been "out" before 1 January 1692, but Dalrymple and the Earl of Breadalbane actually came up with the plans to make am example of MacIan of Glencoe.
