carolina kilt, anyone?
Howdy.
I was wondering how many of us have a goal of acquiring a kilt and/or plaids in tartan Carolina. My thinking is that if several of us had them, we could get together somewhere and take a bunch of pictures and get on television and what-have-you and have a grand old time.
I suppose folks in other states would want these as well, and that's alright with me, as long as they behave themselves.
So, what's the count?
Put me down for 1 kilt and 1 half-plaid.

I'm not in Carolina, but I've got the kilt, I plan to wear it when I'm down in mid April may even wear it to the Loch Norman Games if we can make that happen. Sewn up by our own Matt Newsome.

That's sharp, McMurdo. I may have to consider adding that to my "to-buy" list. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen before the Loch Norman Games. It should still be a good time, though.

Like Glen, I'm not in NC either. I do however have a North Carolina tartan kilt, made from the same bolt of tartan as Glen's.

I have a self-made box-pleat in Carolina. (with no decent photo available on this computer...)

Unlike Glen and Bradley, I own a Carolina kilt and actually live in North Carolina. In fact, I was born in this state, and have never resided anywhere else -- nor do I have the desire to. I love my home state and consider myself blessed to be able to live here! (and for what it's worth, if I ever had to relocate to a different state, my second choice would be South Carolina, in which case the tartan would still apply). :-)
All the pictures thus far have been of the Carolina tartan in the old Wilsons of Bannockburn colors (c. late 18th cent), which was the color scheme used by Peter MacDonald, the designer of the tartan. See:
www.carolinatartan.com
Here is an image of the same tartan in the modern color scheme, with the colors a bit brighter.
This is the same cloth that the Cross Creek Pipes & Drums have their new kilts in. I sold this kilt to a fellow in the UK, proving once again that you don't have to actually reside in the Carolinas to enjoy wearing this tartan.
Lastly, just for general FYI, I am strongly considering having one of these woven up to keep on hand at the museum gift shop:
If I can get a whole bolt of the cloth woven up to keep on hand, I would be able to offer kilts and yard goods in this tartan at standard, as opposed to custom prices, making it a bit easier for all of y'all who want a Carolina kilt to budget it.
It may be a few months before it happens, though. We are just now starting to come out of our "slow season" at the museum (tourism is very seasonal up in the NC mountains) and until things pick up for the summer we have to watch every penny we spend carefully. Then once the bolt is ordered, it would still be another two to three months before we actually saw the cloth.
But if anyone is thinking of ordering a Carolina kilt, or would be interested in yard goods, and wants to go ahead and commit to an order, that may enable us to order the bolt of cloth sooner, rather than later. Just let me know.

Matt,
Do you realize how cruel it is to post that pic of a WHOLE BOLT of Carolina? If I had that, I'd wrap my house in it!
Have you (or anyone else) ever box-pleated Carolina to the red stripe, with the blue stripes showing and the black beside the blue forming the edges of the pleat? This method puts all the green in the under-pleat, and shows the Carolina blue (for obvious reasons!) and the red and black of a certain Lutheran university in a major furniture-making city in the Piedmont. That's how I want mine done, once my sporran refills with $.

I'm another full-on NC native as well, Matthew. Born and raised in North Wilkesboro, living/working in Asheville now. You are right... we are blessed to live in such a beautiful area. I took it for granted for a long time in the early part of my life... now I don't want to move anywhere else!
I'd be interested in exploring the idea of a group-order for the tartan to make it easier to acquire. I'm saving for a different kilt at the moment, but a Carolina kilt would be close behind in priority for sure.
Cheers...

I'm a South Carolina native and even though I've not lived there in 24 years I still consider it home. Here's are a couple of rather casual shots of mine: (Four yard box pleat by Matt Newsome)

I ordered enough cloth a couple of years ago, just after I moved to Virginia. I had my local kilt maker make a throw blanket for our couch. It's really nice looking.
I lived in NC for over 30 years before we moved to VA. Went to school at WCU and NCSU. I would be interested in getting one of these kilts.
