    Clan badge variations

When looking at various clan sites and at clan badges, I have noticed that sometimes the tip of the belt drapes OVER the lower portion of the belt and sometimes it is BEHIND the belt.

Is there a wrong or right way that it should appear, is this just a matter of choice, or does the difference signify anything (Highlander vs. Lowlander)?

If the belt tip goes under the belt it signifies you are a true and faithful Clan Member.

If the belt tip goes over the belt it signifies you are a true and faithful Clan Member.

Actually it is all up to the artist who drew the design. The design used by Gaelic Themes was drawn by Romilly Squire who is the Illustrator to The Lord Lyon. This design is copyright protected and should not be copied.

And all this time I thought that if the tip went under the badge was of Highland clan, and if it went over, the badge was of a Lowland Family. You live and learn!

Where do people come up with this sort of mis-information?

    The Definitive Answer

Those drawn by Romilly Squire of Rubislaw are heraldically correct. The proper form is for the tip of the strap of clan badges go over the strap, whilst the insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter has it tucked under the strap.

Having just scrolled through the members list, there are 165 representations of clan badges used as avatars. 103 are correctly drawn (the tongue of the strap over the strap) and 62 are incorrectly drawn (the tongue of the strap tucked under the strap).

Make of these numbers what you will.

This is as I understand it too. I seem to recal that, 30 or 40 years ago(could be more) there was quite a debate going on about this, by those that understand these things and the end result has been that with clan badges the tip should go over the strap.

OK guys, this was meant as a very tongue in cheek response to the Wizard of BC's suggestion! I did not think anyone would take it seriously.
