I don't know why, but I always thought of the Black Watch as dressy. Sort of formal in a certain kind of way. I have a SWK BW and then I have a 16 oz wool that I use for formal occasions. I wear all of the fancy stuff with the 16 oz. when I want to really dress up. I do not know about any of the "Bad" stuff they may have done. It's like living in Atlanta and not liking anyone from Michigan simply because of what the troops from Michigan supposedly did to Atlanta while participating in Sherman's march to the sea during the Civil War. I really like the tartan though.

A few years ago, at an open air event, a 60ish man wearing a bonnet actually sneered at my BlackWatch kilt and grumbled "Harrumph - Damn Campbell." I didn't feel like taking the time to deal with him.

There are also so Royal Stewart snobs about. While I don't personnallly care for the RS tartan, I would never express displeasure to another person wearing that kilt.

I have no problem with the look of the Black Watch; however, I think there are a lot of historical and religious overtones that makes the Black Watch a undesirable tartan for some. The Black Watch is seen by some as an historic symbol of the Protestant Hanoverians, as opposed to the loyalty most of the Highlanders had to the Catholic King James II of England.

From the okmilmuseum site: "Gaelic speaking, Catholic and suspect in their loyalty to the protestant Hanoverian King George II in London, the Black Watch were raised to watch the highlands and provide the outward example of allegiance to the crown."

I like the Black Watch (ie, government sett) and the history and honor of the Scottish soldier it represents.

My second kilt, and favorite, was in the Black Watch tartan. I picked it partly because I reenacted two 18th century Highland Regiments, both of which wore that tartan, and secondly because I was on active duty at the time and there were no other military tartans at the time.

I have had 3 kilts in the Government sett as well as RS and Saffron. The Black Watch has to be my hands down favorite. Don't forget the 71st and 84th in your list of regiments who wore this tartan.

Well, I was brainwashed as a kid by my grandfather Murdoch Macdonald. As an adult I've learned more and don't harbor the prejudice. This board has helped with that.

But I also have the Gordon already - which is a strong clan tartan of mine - and Black Watch is a common tartan.

I'm also pretty convinced that if I did wear the tartan my Grandfather would rise from the grave and haunt me.....

Plenty of other tartans on my wish list...

That's funny. I keep forgetting that BW and Campbell are the same thing. I like how he assumed that you were a Campbell and not just some guy in a kilt, the BW being the most universal tartan.
