seal skin sporrans
Anyone in the US have a seal skin sporran? I ask b/c it's my understanding that it's illegal here. I see them for sale all the time, but not for shipment to the US.

I have a semi-formal, but it was imported before the ban on seal skin.

Does anyone know if the ban covers Antique Used Sporrans too?

I won a wonderful one on ebay, antique, but the seller refused to send it once they found I was in the US. I don't know the regs on antiques, but that was my experience.

Seems to me it's banned for a reason. Why would anyone want one after the fact.

It appears that the ban is part of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. The EU has now also passed a ban on the import of seal skins as well as other countries. I haven't found evidence that posession of seal skin is illegal however, if import has been banned for 37 years, I would assume (read I'm not a lawer so I don't really know) that ownership of seal byprodcts manufactured, or imported, since that time are also illegal. That's why I purchased a muskrat skin sporran instead.

As far as I know, wearing is legal, shipping them into the US is illegal.
