Some magnets can hold the pin strongly enough. However, The Wizard of BC pointed out that the magnet also gets stuck to anything iron that you walk buy, including poles and bumpers.
As Ted has said, I have never had a problem with losing my kilt pin using magnets. But to his other point, I am able to continue to fund my kilting by selling the scrap iron that comes home with me. The most profitable being the 1955 t-bird.
