Black Watch Tartan

I have nothing personal against the BW, think it is a somewhat generic, very commomly seen (ubiquitious--good word), but beautiful tartan. But I have no personal desire to invest in a nice one since it doesn't particulalry float my personal boat. I think I also harken back to the days of my youth when it was the tartan worn by the catholic schoolgirls in their tartan skirted uniforms, and they used to verbally abuse all us poor public school kids for not having money enough for private schools. Might have something to do with it.

Were a beautiful handmade BW in regimantal weight in my not common size to find its way into my closet while bypassing my wallet I doubt I would scream with horror, or jump with joy. But I would likely wear it with pride. So if anybody out there has one in 45/47/26 that needs a good home just PM me and I will even pay the postage.

Actually, the Campbell chief only recognizes four tartans, three for the three different "houses" of the clan, and the Campbell, or BW.

As a Douglas, our modern also takes after the BW, many of the green and blue tartans pop up after the forming of the regiment.

Yes, the Douglas was worn by the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), however many tartans did originate from the Governmet Sett, as noted by these articles from Matt Newsome:

Noted tartan scholar Jamie Scarlett believed that the regimental tartan was one of the origins of the modern clan tartan.

My first kilt was in Black Watch.

One of the next kilts on my list will be in the Forbes tartan, as that is the tartan of the Liverpool Scottish.

Black Watch is a beautiful tartan. For many people it is the only tartan they know. Yes, it is everywhere but I put that to its look. Matches almost anything.

Many in my family have, over generations, been member of the Black Watch ( Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. A number of family members died in World War I and World War II while with this regiment. I do wear Black Watch tartan with pride.

I really like my Black Watch kilt my grandmother was a campbell,my dad side of the familys tartan looks like something you would wear at christmas red and green.

So most of the time I am in my BW,and the on holidays I wear my familys.

Well,....I personally love the Black Watch tartan, as i have a love for all things military, and most of the military tartans are based around the Black Watch tartan, (or Government tartan).
The Gordon is Black watch with a yellow stripe,
The McKenzie is BW with a red a white stripe,
The Leslie is the same (different pattern)
The Sutherland tartan is a lighter shade of BW,
and so on........
I can however understand why some Scottish folk wouldn't like it, but that is a matter i would prefer avoid.
I think that to see a Black Watch drummer in scarlet doublet and BW tartan kilt, is a great contrasting and beautiful uniform.

Some people hate Clan Campbell. I have been told by family members that in some parts of the Highlands people make jokes about shooting a Campbell on sight. As you know, Black Watch is the official tartan of the Clan Campbell.

The Campbells of Dallas/Fort Worth are quite bold during the festivals. They have mocked up cans of Campbell Soup "Cream of MacDonald" on the table in front of their clan tent.

... A few years ago, at an open air event, a 60ish man wearing a bonnet actually sneered at my BlackWatch kilt and grumbled "Harrumph - Damn Campbell." I didn't feel like taking the time to deal with him...
