The taboo of White hose comes from the rental companies. They buy inexpensive White-White hose to sell cheap with their rental Kilts.
So, if you see someone with thin, White-White hose at a wedding it is a good bet that they rented their Kilt.
I don't happen to own any White Hose. But I wear Cream or Ecru hose if I am wearing a White Shirt.
In fact my "rule of thumb" is to match my Hose to my Shirt. I seldom match anything in my outfit to the colors of my Kilt. I let the Kilt stand alone.
So, if I am wearing a Brown shirt I'll wear Tan or Coffee Brown Hose. With a Blue shirt I wear Blue Hose and so forth.
I then wear flashes that match my Jacket pocket square.
I then use as another "rule of thumb" to wear Browns together with Greens, Reds, and Yellows. I wear Black with Grays, Blues, and Whites.
It is sort of like the rule of "all your leather should match" All Black Leather or all Brown Leather. Which goes along with your Metal. All brass or Yellow Gold or all Silver & Pewter.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

I have black, navy blue, cream, and green. I have a pair of red garters (traditional). I probably need a pair of green garters. This all will go with my saffron, green, and my Leatherneck kilt. Mind you, I will wear a khaki, green, blue shirts, and white with a waistcoat.

The voice of Jock Scot in my head is saying, "don't get all wound up about this matching business."
Voices of other people in my head are saying, "don't stand next to me, your shirt is too yellow."
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I like some co-ordination, but I do think an "overly-matched" outfit can look like you're trying too hard.
I think harsh white hose look like athletic socks on steroids (insert your own favorite sullied-sports-star reference here). I think muted greens, and other earth tones can be really versatile in day / casual settings. Ecru and cream can work when you have white somewhere else, like your shirt, or a prominent tartan stripe.
I am not among those who think that brown (as in brown leathers, or tweeds) don't go with blues. It just depends on the brown and the blue. Nature throws those colors together all the time with some good results.
Black has a way of "formal-izing" an outfit. IMHO, that's true of black leathers and black hose. With the right garter ties, or hose tops, black hose don't have to look to funereal and I lean toward them in formal situations. I probably wouldn't if I owned diced or argyll hose, but I haven't gotten there on my list yet.

For me it is nearly all the shades of green, blue, brown, olive, khaki, and gray.
And dark red.
But no black or white.
