I'm not really looking to add to the thousands of named tartans... 'Twas only in jest... I can't afford "real" tartan at this time so this "McHancock" fabric will have to do. I was merely asking if I would be spotted a mile away in a *GASP* fashion plaid or if it would be an excusable offense for a broke dude from Tennessee to make a kilt out of said fabric...
Anyway, I think I'm gonna go for it! This will be fun! haha Thanks again you guys! We'll see how this goes... lol

My first kilt was made from similarly purchased fabric. It is a good learning experience and will look great as a kilt.

I'd say go for it, this will be a learning experience for you so may as well use what you got. Anyway I'm sure there is nothing better than strapping on a kilt you made yourself, it will look fine, good luck with it.

Just a thought...
Many, indeed most of the tartans in Wilson's books were originally named completly arbitarily with the name of clans etc, indeed some were named several times with different clans.
And whether or not a tartan is named or a fashion tartan, they are still both tartans, registering a piece of same warp/weft fabric doesn't actually make it a tartan, it simply gives it a name.
There are lots of fashion tartans which are great to use and we shouldn't actually look down on them by giving them a lesser value than named tartans

The definition of Tartan from the Scottish Tartans Authority:
Tartan is woven from threads which cross at right angles and the pattern - called the SETT - therefore has, of necessity, to be of rectangular format. It comprises a series of stripes which, although exceptions are not uncommon, generally are (a) the same in both warp and weft of the cloth and (b) are expressed as a half-sett which repeats, reversing as it goes, along and across the cloth, so that each half-sett is the mirror-image of its neighbour; these introduce further inviolable rules.
Please note that no where does it mention naming or registering a pattern to qualify as being a Tartan.
Please also note that no where does it say Twill Weave.
The words "Fashion Tartan" seem to have picked up a negative connotation but they are Tartan neverless.
If a Tartan is not named then please feel free to call it whatever you want.
As long as you don't try to name your Fashion Tartan using a name of a Registered Tartan or call your Tartan something stupid I think it will get by the Tartan Cops.
I have fun with the ladies at my local fabric store by going in and looking at the bolts of Fashion Tartan and in a loud voice saying "OH look honey, they have the Steve Tartan."

If you like the material, make a kilt out of it! It doesn't have to be a registered tartan to have pleats!
