    belt loop usage?

I was kitted out for my first performance with my school's pipe band a while back, and had my kilt belt running through the belt loops on my kilt as would seem to be logical. I then noticed that none of the other drummers or pipers had their belts through the belt loops, and was told that the belt loops weren't for the kilt belt, but only for the sporran strap. I am admittedly a kilt newbie, so I really have no idea whatsoever. What's the deal?

For the sake of argument, don't use them for a belt unless you just want to. The belt tends to ride up in the back and if the belt is through the loops the back of the kilt can be distorted. The confusion arises because the loops are 2.5" - 3" wide, perfect for a kilt belt. The intention though is to make it easy to pass a sporran strap through while reaching behind your back, blind. It would be much more difficult to slip it through a 1/2" loop.

I run my belt through the loops. It's just how I roll.

I just discovered last night that putting on a sporran without using the "belt" loops actually stays up! In which case, I don't think I'll be using the loops for either going forward. So much easier this way

I don't have belt loops on the kilt I wear, but there are keepers on the one I'm trying to sell, and they're coming loose.
If you can take them off, it won't jurt anything, and your belt and sporran will stay up just fine without the loops.

If my kilt has "belt loops", I normally use them.
    1. It keeps the ( in my case ) the belt, in the rear, from riding up over the back of the kilt.
    2. Helps position the sporran strap.

when i bought my kilt a few months back it was a option to have loops added so i said yeah why not its free to add em ,
i just intend to use em for my sporran but with my kilt being a 27-28 inch waist (slinky slinky) i think the belt should sit right without using them but ive yet to get my kilt so time will tell

Don't use the belt loops for belting. Don't use the hanging loops for hanging. But, do use the leather straps for strapping.

My kilts for the last 70(nearly) years have not had belt loops, so I have no idea what they are doing on the kilt, yet alone know what to do with them, other than cut them off.
