The rise of steps behind him and left are circular and lead to the cenotaph (War Memorial) and the paved area to the right of the lampost is called the "Flag Market" (as in the market area paved with Flagstones rather than a market that sells flags). This is where the ancient market used to set up before the Victorians built the lovely covered outdoor market place around the corner and the 1960's planners build the ghastly indoor market building that's next to it... The Flag Market isn't used as a market place anymore but it does get an ice rink plonked on it over Christmas and there is a bloke sells baked potatoes from a mobile oven year round but I don't suppose that counts. The Black Horse is about 50 meters away and directly behind where the photographer would be standing in this photo. Serves some of the best beer in town!

Good point. I forgot to mention that. Two firsts in one night. We'll definately have to have more meets.
