My XMTS tartan kilt is in military box pleats to the yellow stripe. Actually compared to the front it is quite subtle

After pleating and re-pleating and re-re-pleating my X Marks tartan on the bed and even flattening the pleats under a piece of glass to figure out how it would look, this is exactly what I settled on.
It was kind of funny, I did two practice kilts to the sett in preparation for doing the X Marks tartan kilt to the sett, and then I changed my mind in the last week.
A nice overview of X Marks tartan pleating options can be see in this photo...

from the Nor Cal Rabbles 2008 Burns Night.

I, too. However, one day soon I shall have to decide! Decisions, aughh! Alan, thanks for reminding us of that great photo!
I'm thinking my planned PV kilt will be to sett. Some of the remaining fabric is intended as a skirt for SWMBO, so her choice may play into the decision. Hmm on the other hand, hers may just be cut on the bias.

Nice picture, it illustrates this option very well! Great minds think alike.
Now, wasn't there some discussion, at some point about your choice of pleating direction for this kilt?

Alan,
Thanks for the picture. They all look smashing, I'm sure that I'll be happy with whatever option I chose.
I am, however astounded over the collection of (gasp) white hose!

I just wandered into this thread looking for the right place to post a question about hemming and I have learned yet another aspect of kilting, my brain is exploding. I had no idea that the look of a tartan changed with what it was pleated to. The group picture was very helpful to see the subtle differences.

Yeah...it comes up whenever I post this picture. I call it the "American Automobile" pleating option.
Another example of an interesting idea that doesn't quite live up to its potential, I suppose.

I do not own the Xmarks tartan, but being that I am getting kind of old I am pretty "sett" in my ways, so to speak, so I voted pleated to sett. Just have not found the tartan yet that I like pleated to a stripe or no stripe better than to sett. Just me and my strange eye for fashion.

I was in on the last PV run and am having a "Tweskbury" pleated to the yellow stripe. I just can't wait to get it. Once it's on, photos will follow!
By the way Rabble, nice kilts all 'round!!
