Since you seem to be unfamiliar with tartan fabric, please note, that the thread count is the same regardless of weight. Therefore in a Travel Rug, the pattern will be the same as a light-weight (6oz) used for ties, women's skirts and sashes, just that the repeat will be a lot larger.

Minimum weight for a kilt should be about 13/14 oz, any less and the pleats will not hold well. The "normal" is 16oz, which make a most handsome kilt. Also, the lighter weights (4 to 6 oz) may or may not be a twill weave. Kilt fabric is traditionally a twill weave (hence the diagonal pattern within the weave).
