By the way, you're not limited to wearing only a tartan that you have a family connection to. You can wear any one of them, unless it's restricted. However, if you want a tartan with some "meaning" to you, why not join some of the rest of us who are commissioning kilts in tartan Carolina? There might be time to have it made between now and October, or you might be able to borrow one.
I'd suggest you go to Furman to the Greater Greenville Games, as suggested above. You'll find plenty of answers and ideas there.
