Glad it all turned out well.
Hope more American students do the same.

The church where I work part-time has a day school with 500 students (pre-K through 8). Although my duties aren't directly with the school, I'm frequently seen on campus in my kilt.
A mother came up to me one morning and said that she was so glad to see me kilted. Her sixth grader has a kilt, which he has worn to special family occasions. She was happy to see the visible support on campus. (I suppose that it doesn't hurt that the Head of School is a man by the name of Hyslop. It also doesn't hurt that the church has a 25 year tradition of Kirkin 'o the Tartan.) It's been an education in cultural diversity, which the church and school support.

I am a school teacher in the same district of where this happened. I also live about 3 minutes away from the school that it happened at. I know some people have been pretty hard on the principla, I think it was just a stupid mistake. He apologized to the student and everything is cool with the student, his parents, and the school.
Another point I want to make is how brave this student was to wear this kilt to school. I know the demographics of this particular school. I can almost bet that most of the students never even heard of a kilt, let alone seen one. It took a lot of guts for this student to wear it to school. I plan on e-mailing the student and congratulating him.
Second point: I think the title of this post needs to be changed. Although the Associated Press titled that way, it is not a good description of the original intent of the article (not suprised the AP spinned this in a negative direction). The original title was:
Kilt creates a stir, then an educational opportunity.
I plan on laminating this article (I get the local newspaper that wrote the story) and putting it up on my door at school. Everyone will see it as they walk in.

I remember such a hippie in college one year. The only logical argument I could come up with was a religious belief one, beyond that, I would think the health codes would be of issue. I'm curious how your incident played out.

Not all. The young ones perhaps. Some actually go into admin to try to fix problems they see with it, other tire of teaching, and going into admin is far easier than starting all over again with college. Some are just power hungry. My wife says she would never want to go into administration. She has had to deal with a few too many idiots in admin to want to join them I think. Like the one that said a poem her class read was overtly sexual and suspended her for just over 2 months. (He said that when it mentioned the flowers in the garden, they were really vaginas, and the persons weeping over their dead husband was really an orgasm. I think he liked Georgia O-Keef (sp?) a bit too much.)

No need for an apology, Dan. You didn't offend me at all; I just wanted to point out the historical facts regarding polygamy.
Regards,
Todd
