Dang, neither have I and I just returned kilted from Albuquerque! (Please, no references to the left turn in Albuquerque... )
Well done and a great story!
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

A bit off topic here, but back in the 50's a destroyer captain bugged his long-term enemy (something happened between them at the Academy) by coming up on the bridge during the mid-watch (midnight to 4 AM) and playing "Scotland the Brave" for four solid hours whenever their ships were berthed next to each other!
The pipes are calling, resistance is futile. - MacTalla Mor

That was either a long tape loop or one heck of a 'piper!
I've heard that flying with antique 'pipes with real ivory can be quite a hassle.

Only if you're flying out of the U.S. and back in. (Really, crossing the border - and going through customs - by any method: flying, driving or sailing.) You need a CITES certificate to show that the ivory really is old and not harvested since the ban (in the '60's?).
On topic: Too bad you weren't upgraded to first class - that's the way you were travelling anyway. At least you got some of their booze!

It never occurred to me that flying Kilted might make the x-ray of the pipe bag less alarming! Used to fly from Arcata, Ca. to Phoenix via San Francisco. Never checked the pipes always took them as carryon and always caused some consternation.
Considering the confined space of an airline cabin, what diabolical weapon could the mind of man conceive more devastating than a stand of Pipes!
