    Edinburgh Kilt shop metamorphosis

Some of you may remember this photo that I posted a while ago -

Well I was in the area with a camera again today and lo and behold it has changed into this -

I don't know why they should have changed the name but if anyone knows please let us know. I hope there was nothing devious intended.

When they were Morrison they were a Gold Bros establishement, so I gotta believe they still are just under a new name. The GB are still using the John Morrison name for their custom kiltmaker line on their website.

I just hate seeing the words "kilt" and "factory" in the same context.

For many years 'John Morrison' was an established kiltmakers of some quality with premises on The Royal Mile, not so far from Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd. Then, maybe three or four years ago, the name and shop were bought out by the Gold Brothers and the John Morrison name began to lose some of its reputation. In more recent times, the GB have tried to restore (at least via the website (www.jmkilts.co.uk) an element of quality to the name - but take a look at the 'More stores' link at that website and you'll see that Gold Brothers are coming!!! It used to be a link to all the GB shops. According to the street view facility at Google Maps, the Royal Mile premises still carry the JM name, but are looking more like just another branch of any of the names used by GB!

I do not believe that John Morrison had a store on Princes Street until GB came along and painted the name on those premises in your earlier photo, and now it seems they have downgraded to a stock clearance or so-called 'Factory Outlet'!

This tartan tatting of Scotland's capital city really must be halted!

    Take care,
    Ham.

Looks like the same stuff in the window, though.

Hamish, I agree. It would appear that the owners of the establishment simply have no pride. What can one do about that?

When ya see the word factory I get the idea of MASS Production lines with POOR Quality a standard.
I don't believe the idea is to arrive in heaven in a well preserved body! But to slide in side ways,Kilt A' Fly'n! Scream'en "Mon Wha A Ride" Kilted Santas

Even worse, Matt, when they add the word "outlet", as that obviously further downgrades the quality and price. Afterall, if it was good quality why did it not sell in a regular retail store, why does it have to be marked down to sell at an outlet?

    'Factory' makes me think 'consistency.'

On second thought, they probably do have pride....in their souq appearance. And they have brought the souq look to a town that had no souq.
