Don't be too harsh on toeclips. I started riding with them in 1969 and feel naked without them, so it's very definitely what I'm used to. I have reflexes to deal with them and don't want to learn new ones.
I also never sit up in bed, courtesy of spending a couple of years in a top bunk very close to a concrete ceiling. After trying to sit up to turn off the alarm for four mornings in a row, I had better reflexes there, too. That was 1979-81. I still always roll on my side and slide out. Can't break the habit.
(I also still laugh remembering the "Oh no, not again" feeling of waking up halfway to the ceiling on the third and fourth days...)

I know this is how he feels too. *sigh* let's hope his reflexes improve.
you'll have to forgive me, but the image of someone smacking their head against the ceiling when they wake up is just killing me! Though I do feel bad for your head
