If tartan isn't your style, you can always try Pictish attire.

With all the counsel you've gotten to this point, I'll simply add my welcome to the rabble, from Bryan/College Station!

First of all welcome to the forum from a fellow newcomer. As previously mentioned there are no "tartan police" and you can wear whatever you like although it is better to have some knowledge about the tartan as you will surely be asked. My only further advice would be wear it as often as you can with pride.

to the rabble from the PNW.

You can, of course, wear any tartan that you have a connection with. Find one that you like, or get one item in each of several tartans, why not?

Thanks for all the replies and welcomes, I didnt think I would get this many

Will answer a few things that came up.

He is my husband to be, we are getting married in September (In secret so dont tell anyone in Boston, though we live in the UK) I want the tartan for my garter.

His mothers family are Sscottish, but his father was in RAF so he wasnt born or raised in Scotland, and doesnt really do tartan, except for weddings (sadly not our own, although I wanted him too)

My Gandfather passed away in 1994, we were quite close so wanted to honour his memory.

However after all this discussion, my friend who is Scottish and is 1 of only 2 guestss at the wedding has bought me a garter, though Im not sure which tartan yet, its a surprise.

In reply to the Welcome from Canada, thats thats where Im going on honeymoon, driving accross the border from Boston

    How about Hunting Stewart?
(rather moot, I believe my great^5 grandmother was a Gordon, and among her ancestors I find Oliphant, Forbes, Hay, Ogilive, a Stewart, and a number of others. Of course, one has to believe that family tree is even close to accurate that far back, but it should be safe to think that once you have a Scottish ancestor, you probably have all sorts of clan intermarriage... Once you get 1, you have 2 in the parents generation, 4, then 8, then 16, 32, 64 possibilities by that persons great-great-great-great-grandparents, just 6 generations give quite a few possible clans, and whos to say you don't have a various clan in there somewhere....)
