Highland civilian attire is NOT a uniform

As to the number the Navy limits it to one above the ribbons and one below regardless of how many have been earned. The precedence is by either the current, or most recent, command [e.g. SW over AW while on a ship, AW over SW while at an air wing] or by the rigor of the qualification [e.g. SW or SS over DV].
For the other services I think that the pins stack above the ribbons but I am not certain and I do not recall ever seeing more than 2 or three at a time.

Chief [which BTW is one of those military titles that is present in all branches of the US Military, lots of fun at a Joint command]
If one is wearing their service uniform, then one must follow the regulations as laid down for their particular branch of service. However, when in civilian attire, one dresses to a different standard.

Yes, one could wear miniature wings, submariner's badges, etc. above their miniature medals, and some gentlemen do. However, these are items more properly worn on one's uniform, rather than pinned on their Prince Charlie coatee.

Less is more in this instance, and one does not want to run the risk of arriving at the ball looking like Hermann Goering's Christmas tree!

I've known about the initiative the VA has taken in getting us to wear medals on Veterans Day, but haven't really felt comfortable doing it before. Maybe this coming November I will.

Six years U.S.N. with a couple trips to the Persian Gulf tossed in. Unfortunately, not all of them were aboard a ship. Sand Sucks!
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

I'm all for wearing of awards in civilian mode. I had a set of my awards made for a formal @ the Purple Heart National Convention (I am not a PH recipient).
It's definitely something to be proud of - regardless of how many (or few) you were awarded in your time.

I'm also especially thankful for the VA initiative to get a law passed so that those of us that served may salute during the playing of the National Anthem as civilians.
