Prêt-à-Porter
Well, If SPC Boyd doesn't hustle and get me the measurements, I may have to buy a "Prêt-à-Porter" kilt for the presentation.
I've sent him several emails, but haven't heard from him in some time.
Having just returned last fall from where he is (Afghanistan), I can understand the problems in communication.
Hope he is OK.

Great News!
I got the measurements from SPC Boyd this morning, so we can get him a custom kilt rather than an off the peg. Good thing too, because his drop was a lot less than standard.
Cheers, ColMac

Colonel MacNeal, If no one has offered one yet, I have a flask for the lad. Also, have you recieved enough funds for the kilt and sporran? I live and work very near to USA Kilts and have mine from him. If there is anything I can do to help please do not hesitate to contact me. (Side note the redbearded gent in USA's web site is one of my pipe instructors from Ceol Neamh Pipe Band)

Hi KiltFire,
Yes, we've received some very generous donations, and have covered just about everything. Mad props to all the donors!
Since the lad is not yet 21, and his parents (non-drinkers) will be present at the gifting, maybe the flask is not the best idea.
I happen to know he collects unique boxer shorts. Can you get some tartan boxers - size 34? Maybe some Loud MacLeod's ?
If this sounds good, or you think of some other cool idea just ask me to PM you my mailing address.
Thanks, ColMac

Let the lad have the flask generously offered. Even though he is not yet 21, it will give him a head start for when he does "become legal". He can fill it on his 21st birthday and go forth in his kilt with a fully loaded flask tucked in his sporran.
He may not be a drinker either though, but still he should have all the accessories.
Perhaps there can be some engraving done upon the flask? A "In honor of your service to your country and thank you from X Marks" or something of the like? It may make it more meaningful.
Just my two cents.

I understand the desire to give a flask, but, "no alcohol" is a very strict doctrine in many religious groups. Is he and his parents non-drinkers because of religious reasons, if so the giving of a flask may not be a good idea. I have some relatives that refuse to enter restaurants if they serve alcohol. It does not matter that they do not have to order, they believe that they would be supporting drinking if they support the restaurant.
I would be careful giving a flask to a non-drinker until I had more information.
Just my 2 cents.
If you see abbreviations, initials or acronyms you do not know the Xmarks FAQ section on abbreviations may help.

Whereas we might wish to present the gent with something of significance as an article of appreciation, and a flask might not be received well by his parents or himself, we should consider another object.
I believe that a Quiaich, properly engraved would be the best gift, although it originated for the drinking of a wee dram, and was made of wood. Today it is made of metal, and is primarily a gift of high honour, whether at the baptism of a child, the top table at a wedding, or a soldier returning by the High Road to Scotland. It is unique to Scotland, and as such would be fitting of his heritage and his service. With it should be a certificate displaying the warmth of the X-marks welcome, and possibly listing all the X-markers who have posted/contributed to this award.
The gent collects unique boxer shorts. The only problem with tartan shorts is that the generic boxer short in the U.S.A. is of a plaid in cotton, and hard to distinguish as unique from a real tartan. He might like a pair that have the popular Gaelic expression emblazoned on the correct side.
Another tuppence tossed into the well.
Off soapbox.

Instead of a flask, what about a spare belt buckle with the Army seal on it? I don't have one, but there are some folks here who can make or obtain one. One of my wife's frineds is in the Navy and graduating from language school in July. My wife had a broach made with the Navy seal to present as a graduation gift. The maker of these buckles and brooches lives in New Hampshire, I believe, but I cannot remember his name.
