does anyone know why my gordon highlander kilt has only straps on the right hand side and/or whats the purpose of the two buttons on the back near the kidneys?

Just a guess, but the buttons may be for the kilt apron.

The buttons in back are for braces. As for there not being a strap on the left...maybe it was removed at some point in its history?

i thought bout braces but there's no similar fixing point at the front. as to the no left strap bin removed, i originally thought that but there's no hole in the left side for a strap. i googled it and some were issued like that but its the first time i've seen something like it in either genuine army or tailored kilts

If it has buttons for braces it's probably an older kilt, and up to a certain point military kilts were issued without any kinds of straps or fastenings at all. They were worn held in place by pins. If you wanted leather straps and buckles, you had to add them afterwards. Probably someone just didn't see the need for the inside apron strap and didn't want to add it.

I have seen them with small hook-and-eye set-ups on the left side, where there would be three eyes at differing distances to accomodate larger or smaller waists. I have seen this as well with kilts with the left side strap where the hook/eye is at the waist band to keep the high rise closed.

My first kilt was an ex HLI kilt it had 1 strap on right hand side none on left inside apron had a flannel lining which acted like a form of velcro never had any bother with this set up
