Is it just me though, or do the Pop stars of today lack the substance of those of the previous three decades. It's all about who looks good on camera, who will do what they are told by the marketing gurus, and if they can't sing, why they will computerize it or make it so noisy it really doesn't matter

I think Lily Allen is great! She writes her own music. She's witty, sarcastic, and unapologetic.

Not familiar with her, but I will check her out!
How would you describe her work?

Right on.
And the onliest* reason (and I said that to say this*) is that performance music is a visual as well as an auditory entertainment, and entertainment is a product, and sex sells.

A bit odd, but catchy. I love her voice though. Not that she's a great singer, I just enjoy her voice.

I may have been on a higher plain at the time but it wasn't like this in 1979 when I was watching Zeppelin at Knebworth. ...
You must have missed Robert Plant's unbuttoned shirt, beautiful long hair, tight jeans and sensual moves.

See the thing about Elvis, and really the Beatles as well, is that they accomplished what I will call paradigm shifts. The Beatles three times. Elvis, ? twice. They changed the music. I don't think they went with what their handklers told them, but what they felt. That was heart in that music, not fluff!

Throughout history, they are all peacocks.. its just done it with clothing... Sir Elton John comes to mind...and others do it with sexuality.. in varying degrees.. all in all its the same result.. to catch our attention.. and some of them actually have talent...LOL
